About this directory
A free, public reference of 24,744 transfer stations, recycling centers and landfills across all 50 states and DC, built by CurbWaste from government and open map data. One page per facility, last built 2026-10-09.

Facility types
Pages are grouped into three sections: Transfer Stations, Recycling Centers, Landfills. A facility that is both a transfer station and a recycling center is listed in both hubs but has one page. Every page states the facility's specific type, for example Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), Metals Recycling Facility or Electronics Recycling Facility, and explains what that kind of site typically accepts.
Data sources
| Source | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| U.S. EPA facility datasets | The base list of transfer stations, recycling facilities and landfills, including the EPA Recycling Infrastructure and Market Opportunities Map categories (metals, electronics, tires, plastics, glass, paper, wood and textiles recycling, materials recovery facilities) and the Disaster Debris Recovery Tool. |
| U.S. EPA Facility Registry Service (FRS), September 2026 | EPA registry IDs, program links and detail-page URLs for 10,597 facilities, plus about 1,011 transfer stations that only FRS lists. |
| U.S. EPA Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP), September 2024 database | Status (open or closed), ownership, opening and closure years, waste in place, design capacity, annual acceptance and landfill-gas project data for 2,331 municipal solid waste landfills. |
| Overture Maps Foundation, Places release 2026-05-20 | Open map data used for recycling centers and transfer stations missing from the EPA files, and for matching phone numbers and websites to facilities by location and name. |
| FMCSA SAFER motor-carrier census, May 2026 | A small number of hauler-operated disposal sites verified as genuine facilities. |
Each facility page lists the sources that contributed to it, and EPA-registered facilities link to their EPA Facility Registry Service detail page.
How the directory is built
- Load every source, keep only transfer stations, recycling facilities and municipal solid waste landfills, and drop records outside the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
- Merge duplicates. Two records are the same facility only when they share a name and sit within 1.5 km of each other or on the same street. Landfills are matched separately so a landfill never merges into a transfer station.
- Assign each facility to its county from its coordinates using county boundary polygons, falling back to the ZIP code. Coordinates are discarded when they fall in a different state than the address or more than 100 miles from the ZIP code centroid.
- Fill missing phone numbers and websites from Overture Maps when a record matches by location and name. Directory sites, social networks and government portals are never used as a facility website.
- Normalize display text: all-capitals names and cities are title-cased, placeholder streets are blanked, and control characters are removed. Identifiers and page addresses never change once published.
- Build one page per facility with a stable address, a map, nearby facilities of the same type, the nearest landfill and links to the state, county and city hubs.
Accuracy and limits
- Hours, fees and accepted materials change often and are not tracked here. Call the facility before visiting.
- Landfills are shown as open or closed according to the EPA LMOP database. Closure years for open landfills are the operator's projection.
- Source records can lag reality by a year or more. A facility that has closed or changed its name may still appear.
- Some facilities have no coordinates, no county or no city because the source record lacked them. They are listed on their state page.
- Phone numbers and websites are matched from open data and may belong to the operating company rather than the individual site.
Updates
The whole directory is rebuilt from the source files in one pass. The build date appears on every page as "Last verified". Page addresses are permanent: a facility keeps its URL across rebuilds, and the sitemaps at /sitemap-index.xml and /sitemap.xml list every page.
