About this facility
A metals recycling facility, often called a scrap yard, buys and processes ferrous metal (steel, iron) and non-ferrous metal (aluminum, copper, brass, stainless) from contractors, haulers, manufacturers and the public. Material is weighed on a certified scale, graded, then sheared, baled or shredded for sale to steel mills and smelters. Prices change with commodity markets and are usually posted per pound or per ton by grade. Most yards require photo ID for payment and will not take sealed containers, pressurized cylinders or items with fluids. Hours, fees and accepted materials vary — call ahead to check current prices, what must be separated and whether vehicles, appliances or wire are accepted.
Typically accepted at a Metals Recycling Facility
- Steel and iron scrap
- Aluminum cans, siding and extrusions
- Copper pipe and wire
- Brass fixtures
- Stainless steel
- Appliances and vehicles (at many yards)
- Catalytic converters and batteries (documentation required)
Hours, fees and accepted materials vary by site — call ahead before hauling a load.
